One of the biggest and most expensive episodes ever made for BBC One’s Casualty is due to air on Saturday, after filming in Bristol and Yate earlier this year.
Fans of the long-running BBC medical drama will know that Saturday’s episode will feature a catastrophic motorway explosion which is set to leave at least one life hanging in the balance. The dramatic crash scene features a petrol tanker turning on its side with disastrous consequences for the paramedic crew of the Holby Emergency Department.
The unmissable explosion stunt (pictured) was filmed on 10 May on a unique stretch of 400m of unused carriageway in Yate, known as the ‘Road To Nowhere’, which is offered to filmmakers by South Gloucestershire Council.
The location has hosted filming for a range of other high-profile shoots in the past, including Broadchurch and Skins.
In April and May, Bristol Film Office assisted with filming at Bristol locations that also feature in the episode. Scenes were shot at Flax Bourton Mortuary, Carolina House in Stokes Croft and upon a lowloader driven along the M32 in the Newfoundland Road area.
