Bristol is a city where creativity and climate action go hand in hand. As a UNESCO City of Film and a leader in sustainable screen production, we’re committed to helping every production – large or small – reduce its environmental impact while making the most of our world-class filming locations and facilities.
With Bristol Film Office working alongside The Bottle Yard Studios and a citywide network of partners driving innovation, Bristol offers a uniquely forward-thinking environment for low‑carbon, environmentally responsible filmmaking.
Our Commitment to a Greener Screen Sector
Bristol Film Office and The Bottle Yard Studios established a joint Green Team in 2020, underpinned by Bristol’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.
This collaborative approach supports decarbonisation projects across The Bottle Yard’s two studio sites and helps productions filming on location in Bristol to achieve BAFTA albert certification and embed sustainable practices at all stages of their work.

Bristol is home to one of the most sustainable studio complexes in the world. Rated Outstanding in the 2025/26 BAFTA albert Studio Sustainability Standard, The Bottle Yard’s premium TBY2 facility achieved the highest score of all global participants in the cohort. Its original TBY1 site is also rated Excellent, demonstrating the Studios’ commitment to sustainability across its entire operation.

Filming Sustainably On Location in Bristol
By filming sustainably in Bristol, you’re joining a creative community committed to climate action—and helping shape a more resilient, responsible screen industry for the future.
Whether you’re shooting a major drama, factual series or indie film, our team is ready to support sustainable planning from development to wrap. Our sustainable location support is designed to help productions minimise their footprint across Bristol’s streets, parks, heritage sites and waterfront locations.
On location, we can guide you through cleaner power options — such as grid connections, mobile battery units or nearby charging points — and help you plan quieter, lower‑emission shoots that benefit both the environment and local communities.
Once these options are identified, they can be built into your pre‑shoot Clean Power Meeting with your Location Team and electricians. During recces, we’ll help pinpoint low‑carbon power sources near each location and advise on practical considerations like cable routes and site access.

A Citywide Network Driving Climate Action
Bristol is committed to helping productions reduce their carbon impact by making it easier to access clean, reliable energy – and there’s a whole host of partners in the city and wider region helping make positive change.
Upcoming initiatives backed by Bristol Film Office include off-grid power to Unit Bases and the West of England Mobile Power Hub Pilot.

Coming Soon: West of England Mobile Power Hub Pilot
A new renewable‑energy solution launching in Summer 2026, designed for powering live events and location filming without relying on generators. Developed by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, Bristol City Council, Act 1.5 and Power Logistics, it is designed to cut air pollution, reduce carbon emissions and demonstrate how clean, mobile battery power can work reliably on the ground. A preview of the project was shared at the ‘Bristol Production Power’ event held in partnership with BAFTA albert in March 2026. Further details will be released soon.
National Guidance
Areas of best practice in screen sustainability span everything from renewable power solutions (grid tie-ins and battery units), waste reduction, material reuse and circular design to biodiversity protection (especially in ecologically sensitive areas), eliminating single use plastics and improving sustainable catering.
We signpost towards the latest strategic work and practical resources produced by BAFTA albert, the leading screen industry organisation for environmental sustainability, and national agencies and organisations including the BFI, Filming in England and Julie’s Bicycle.
Here are just a few links to some key tools and resources:

The BAFTA albert Suppliers Directory is the go-to resource for productions looking to reduce its environmental impact by working with sustainable suppliers for the Film & TV industry.

BAFTA albert’s SPARK report (2025) outlines a roadmap for the UK film and TV industry to transition to clean temporary power by 2030, reducing reliance on fossil fuel generators. Check out this and other landmark reports, including The Accelerate Report (2025), Biodiversity and the Screen Industries (2023) and A Screen New Deal (2020), on the BAFTA albert Resources Hub.

In addition to their national Crew and Suppliers Directories that help productions connect with local talent and businesses, Filming in England also offer a Sustainability Toolkit to help productions of all sizes improve their environmental impact in conjunction with BAFTA albert certification. Resources include Sustainable Production Guidelines, Start-up Meeting Template, Supplier Memo Templates and more.

Julie’s Bicycle are a pioneering non-profit committed to supporting the environmental ambitions of the sector and strengthening creative climate action through collaboration. In partnership with BFI, they offer the Sustainable Screen Resource Hub, a free resource full of guidance, top tips and examples for those working in the screen sector, particularly helpful for those ‘beyond production’ such as exhibitors, screen archives, education and research organisations.
