Hi Michael! Can you describe your typical day at work on this shoot?
A typical day was all about learning from the Director. Understanding and observing how a Director works on such a large set was fascinating. I got a really good understanding of what it takes to direct at that level. I was up close to the actors and listening to how the director would give notes. I also got to see some of the prep that goes into making a TV show and some of the edit process.

What did the experience mean to you?
This was a truly transformative experience. Being my first time on set and on such a funny and enjoyable show that had Bristol at its core, was breath-taking. I think my main take away was the confidence it’s infused in me. I was given the freedom and the space from the Directors and the team. I went from watching and really enjoying the show to being able to lend my voice to some of it. It’s just given me the drive and hunger to direct more TV and has really informed my writing.

How long have you been working in film/TV?
I’ve been working in film/tv for over 10 years making documentaries for the BBC, shorts for Channel 4 and even some music videos. I got funded by the BFI Network to make a short film that I wrote and directed called Pickney and this was well received, screening at numerous international film festivals including being a quarter finalist in the HBO competition at the American Black Film Festival and winning the audience award.

What are you working on now? And/or what do you hope to go on to next?
At the moment I’m on a first look deal with ITV Studios label 5 Acts Productions, based in Cardiff, so I’m writing more exciting shows for TV. I have a short horror film in post-production made with the Bristol School of Acting and their amazing final years students. Of course, all filmed in Bristol. I’m also actively seeking more opportunities to get on set so I’m seeking an agent and one day I will be directing TV.

What advice would you give others starting out in the film and TV industry in Bristol and the South West?
I had no formal education in film and growing up I had no knowledge of the industry or connections. I think networking is key and getting to know and learn as much as possible about the local industry and general industry is important. Connect with other creatives, make stuff, share it and keep creating.
